Introduction
Configurable products are a way to combine product variants into a single product info page on the website. The variants themselves are actually simple products and have their own SKUs and stock management.
Configurable Products let your customers select the variant they desire by choosing options. For example, you sell a t-shirt in two colors and three sizes. You will need to create six variants as six individual products (with their own SKUs) and then add these six products to a configurable product from which customers can choose a specific size and color, then add it to the cart. If desired you could also have customers search for “red medium t-shirt” and land on the specific page for this variant.
Note: a configurable product is the main view of the product; it is composed of a number of simple products with different colors or sizes. Your customers cannot order it; hence the SKU must be different.
In order to add a new configurable product to your store, kindly follow the below steps:
- From your admin panel go to “Catalog” > “Products” > “Manage Products”.
- Click on “Add Product” button.
- From “Product Type” drop down list select “Configurable Product”, and keep the “Attribute set” to “Default”.
- Then click on “Continue” button.

Things to remember
- A Configurable Product is essentially a collection of Simple products which are presented as options in drop-down lists.
- The drop-down list values are based on Attributes that must be set up in advance with required settings. The attribute Scope must be set to Global, and Use to Create Configurable Product must be True. The drop-down Attributes must be included in an Attribute Set, which is then used as a template for the Configurable Product.
- The Simple products associated with a Configurable Product cannot include Custom Variants or Options, and must be based on the same Attribute Set that is used to create the Configurable product.
- The associated products can be generated automatically from inside the Configurable product record.
